Consolidated Research Farms

The Consolidated Research Farms crew directly supports research for the Wooster campus farms.  The following services and materials are provided at no cost to investigators contingent on available funding to the Research Operations Department. Revenue from the sale of crops is used to cover non-project related expenses to establish, maintain and harvest field research projects. 

Materials

5. Compost produced at OARDC compost pad
6. Animal Manure used for fertility on oganic rotation fields
7. Agronomic crop seeds for rotational purposes or if not treatment specific
8. Seeds for cover crops
9. Wheat straw for mulching purposes
10. Fuel to operate farm machinery
11. Parts and labor to repair farm machinery
12. Some limited seasonal laborers to assist farm staff with operations
13. Farm vehicles used by farm staff
14. Equipment lease costs for general operation support

Services

1. Communicate with faculty, staff and students on the status of field operations for plots
2. Field preparation (tillage, raised beds, application of plastic mulch)
3. Fertilizer and soil amendment (compost and manure) applications
4. Maintenance weed control (herbicides, cultivation, hand weeding)
5. Planting / transplanting operations
6. Pruning orchards and vineyards
7. Maintenance and repair of trellises
8. Spray applications for disease and insect control
9. Maintenance and repair of agricultural machinery
10. Assist with transport of machinery and/or materials to other research sites (pre-scheduling required)
11. Assist with installation and operation of irrigation systems
12. Provide machinery operators and laborers to plant, maintain and harvest research plots as requested
13. Maintain records of all operations performed by farm staff
14. Plant crops in non-research areas and on fields for rotational purposes
15. Assignment of space will be based on ensuring ongoing research is in planned locations, finding the best plot space for the research question

Services and support provided centrally from CFAES administration include the following:

1. Salary support for seven full time farm staff (three farm managers, two research assistants and two agricultural technicians
2. Salary and budget support for other Research Operations Units that provide support to the consolidated farms (office staff, Farm Operations Unit, Grounds Maintenance, Feedstock Processing Research Facility)
3. Utility costs (Natural gas, electricity, phone, Internet)
4. Facilities maintenance (buildings, irrigation wells, drainage systems, roads)
5. Equipment grant awards to purchase farm machinery
